Defense Trainer

Every attack in Way of the Sword has one best answer. Learn the matrix, then test yourself until reading and reacting is second nature.

The four defences

Block / Parry

Hold guard to soak a strike. Chip damage still leaks through and a heavy or unblockable blow will break it — blocking buys a beat, it doesn't win the exchange.

Deflect

Push toward the attacker the instant before a blow lands. A clean deflect turns the strike aside instead of merely absorbing it and stokes the Blazing State.

Blazing State

Reflex Dodge

Evade in the last sliver of a second before being hit. A perfect dodge opens a Reflex Combo — a free counter-string while the enemy is committed.

Reflex Combo

Evade

An ordinary roll or step. No timing window and no payoff, but it always pulls you clear — and repeated evades shake off fire.

Reading attacks

  • An enemy winds up a normal melee swing
Pushing toward the strike just before it lands turns it aside and feeds the Blazing State — far stronger than eating it on guard.
    Deflect
  • You want a free counter-string, not just safety
A last-instant evade opens a Reflex Combo while the enemy is still committed to its swing.
    Reflex Dodge
  • An enemy lunges for a grab or throw
Grabs ignore your guard. Press the counter just before the grab lands to break out instead of taking the full throw.
    Counter the grab

Issen finishers

  • An enemy is exhausted / guard-broken
A guard-break finisher on a spent enemy draws out extra souls — and even more when it lands during Soul Time.
    Break Issen
  • An enemy is committing to an attack right now
Striking the instant they attack lands a Counter Issen — the highest soul yield of any finisher.
    Counter Issen
  • You just landed an Issen with more enemies around
Flow straight from one Issen into the next to clear a crowd and keep the soul multiplier rolling.
    Chain Issen

Status & scrambles

  • You've been set on fire and are Burning
Rolling again and again is what smothers the flames — blocking or standing still just lets the burn tick.
    Evade repeatedly
  • Blades cross and you're caught in a Blade Lock
A blade lock is a button race — hammer the input to shove the enemy off and open them up.
    Mash Block / Parry
  • An enemy opens a Blade Barrage flurry
Stay on the prompt through the flurry to ride it out and turn the exchange back on the attacker.
    Press through the barrage

Openings

  • An enemy hasn't noticed you and you're behind it
A strike from behind an unaware enemy is an instant assassination — skip the fight entirely.
    Assassinate
  • The Oni Power Gauge is sufficiently filled
Unleash the Oni Armament — the Two Celestials — for a burst of overwhelming power.
    Two Celestials
